Frontier Science Program
The Frontier Science Program, in which gifted students get professional education in science as a regular student before graduating from high schools, are designed to foster highly creative young scientists and researchers venturing out into the world. We call for applicants in winter and in summer. Successful candidates start their study at Chiba University either from April or September. The curriculum is enriched by small-group instruction, seminars, and one month English training in Canada. The alumni of the program amount to 63 by the end of 2016. Majority of them continue their study at graduate schools at Chiba University or other universities (see the pie chart). Some elder alumni are currently teaching as assistant professors and some others are working as scientists and engineers in research institutes.
This Frontier Science Program was established in 1998. In the first year, we had only three freshmen majoring physics and applied physics. Since then we have expanded the program in wide range of disciplines ranging from Physics, Physical Chemistry, Life Science, various Engineering, and Human Sciences. Currently we are calling for applicants in the four fields listed in the next page. The bar chart below shows the statistics of the applicants and successful candidates in the four fields. We are proud to be the pioneer in the early enrollment in Japan, although early enrollment is popular in many countries. Our program is still at the top in the number of alumni and in variety in Japan. This program receives special support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. We are aiming further improvement in quality of education.

1 Physics fields
Physics is study to seek universal laws embedded in various natural phenomena. The research subjects range widely from the microscopic worlds of elementary particles and atoms through condensed matter to stars and galaxies. We welcome young students interested in understanding the principles of Physics and aiming to be a researcher.
2 Physical Chemistry and Life Science fields
Physical Chemistry is the interface between the Physics and Chemistry. It elucidates structure, formation and interaction of materials on the basis of the theory and methods of Physics. Life science clarifies biological phenomena on the basis of the theory and methods of Physical Chemistry.
3 Engineering fields
This field covers wide range of engineering including architecture, urban environment systems, industrial design, mechanical engineering, medical system engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, nano science, image sciences, and informatics. Students are encouraged to be frontiers in technology.
4 Human Sciences fields
Human sciences provide methods based on natural sciences for analyzing human mind, culture, and society. For an example, it explains a philosophical question “what makes one person distinct from all others?” from the viewpoint of information processing. Similarly the ability to interpret the surrounding environment from what we look at is related to function of eyes and brain by this new science.
